YA Author and Speaker
Inside one writer's brain...

My process
A book starts with an idea, something that keeps me up at night, something that seizes me, and refuses to let go.

A book also arises from characters in my imagination. I become intensely curious about them, want to talk with them, and learn everything I can. It's a little like falling in love. Some characters struggle with the intense heat and relentless sun of the Mojave Desert and others find themselves in a boggy coastal forest.

I visit their world. Yes, travel to where they live, when possible. I take photos, walk around, and experience it in a physical way. Once I'm back home, I create a scrapbook of images, photos, colors, shapes, words, phrases, and objects that help me bring the pieces together.
At the end of it all, I attempt to tell a character's story.

A book is a dance between a writer and those who influence its creation. I've been blessed with a talented writing group, gifted editor, fellow writers, and patient friends who've helped me more than words can express.
